Subject: Vehicle Dwellers at Wales and West Utilities Gasworks Site on Glenfrome Road, Bristol
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my concerns about the eviction that took place on disused land on Glenfrome Road on Saturday 13th June 2020.
The eviction that took place involved the use of excessive force and intimidation. This kind of response is never acceptable, but is even more concerning amidst a pandemic.
Bristol City Council have pointed to advice from Friends, Families and Travellers which states that no unauthorised encampments should be evicted at this time (see here: https://www.gypsy-traveller.org/news/covid-19-guidance-for-supporting-people-living-on-traveller-sites-unauthorised-encampments-and-canal-boats/).
Indeed, during these difficult times it is even more essential that we treat each other with compassion and respect and allow all communities to have a place to live and isolate effectively.
I understand that negotiations are currently underway. I support an approach that seeks to accomodate those living on the site with essential facilties, rather than an enforcement approach involving violence and displacement.
